Here is an antique pocket barometer / altimeter with it’s original case. Barometer is compensated and has outer dial for altitude which rotates for altimeter funtion.
Face is marked “compensated” and “made in england”, i don’t see any maker’s name on it. It measures almost exactly two inches across housing. Glass cover is beveled on edges, it is plated. Plating looks like gold over brass, but i’m not sure so don’t hold me to this.
Barometer shows some light wear from normal use, some brass is showing on top ring and it’s mounting post. Outer altitude dial has some darkening around edge – it looks like oil staining from someone over-oiling it sometime in the past. Rotating ring moves but is a bit gummy, likely old oil. I’ve had it sitting here on my desk for a few days and needle does not move with changes in weather, so i would suspect the works inside are gummed up. I cannot remove the back, i assume it unscrews but if so it’s stuck shut oil again?
Case is hinged with push button latch, leather exterior, and velvet lined interior. Case shows some wear from use and latch button has been ‘repaired’ with tape sometime in the past. Everything is packed very securely in clean new boxes with new packing material. All paper items are also boxed in corrugated rigid board mailers. Signature confirmation is used on anything over $250.00. I will not lie on customs forms.
